A client recently emailed me, asking about a supplement that the guys in his gym were touting as the "New Wonder Supplement". He though that these guys were pretty silly (he's been training with me for a long time and now shares my views on supplements).
Now, these kids are not really silly, In fact what motivates them to get these supplements are their insecurities about their body image and their motivations about performance. Neither of these are silly, what is silly is the ignorance with which they let unscrupulous supplement companies prey on these same insecurities and motivations. The real scammers (and I have met several of them) are the supplement guys (see recent post on Fraud in the Supplement Industry)
But as far as supplements go I would not even spend my money on them unless I was using something in a therapeutic aspect as prescribed by a reputable specialist (and even then I would hesitate). I would rather focus my energies on maximising lifestyle, training and food aspects to maximise my results - that way 100% of my efforts go towards living better. To put it another way, I don't have to work harder, to make more money, to spend more money on a potential of a 0.01% increase in my performance (a.k.a. supplements). I can a) work less to b) sleep more (and better) to c) train harder and smarter which in the end reduces my stress level, and by spending my money on good whole foods - I get great healthy results, not to mention that the path travelled is also more pleasant. What are our results if not the accumulation of the steps we take on the path that we travel every day?
Seb
